Virmax grower partner achieves highest overall score in COTY 2010
Mr. Carlos Imbachi, owner of Finca Buena Vista in San Agustin, Huila obtained the highest overall score at the SCAA's Roaster's Guild Coffees Of The Year 2010 Competition. His lot, submitted by Virmax, Caravela Coffee and Sweetmarias obtained a score of 90.5.
In 2010, 130 specialty coffees were submitted to the competition from 22 different countries. More than 30 experienced judges (cuppers) chose the winning coffees by cupping each sample entered into the competition.
Finca Buena Vista is a 9 hectare farm located in the municipality of San Agustin, south of the department of Huila. It is planted with Caturra and yellow and red Bourbon trees at an elevation of 1,810 masl.
Mr Imbachi personally manages the farm, making sure that the pickers only pick the ripest cherries and then he does the de-pulping and fermentation of his coffee in his own micro-mill. After 16 hours he washes the parchment and sun dries it on "roof patios" (Casa Heldas in Spanish). Mr. Imbachi delivers his coffee to Virmax's warehouse in Pitalito where the coffee is cupped and stored separately to maintain its traceability. Our quality control team provides continuous feedback to Mr. Imbachi which helps him improve his quality.
Mr. Imbachi and Virmax have been working together for the past four years.Over this period of time, Mr. Imbachi has received premiums of two times the market price. With the extra money, Mr. Imbachi has been able to re-invest in his farm and improve his and his family's quality of life. For the past couple of years, he has sold his coffee to Sweetmarias in the US and Seven Seeds in Melbourne (Australia).
